Zomba Airwing Sisters made history at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) yesterday when they became the first unseeded team to sail through to the quarter-finals of the Airtel Money Netball Championships national encounters, which will be concluded today.

Airwing together with Woget Stars, Young Gals, Young Sisters, Splash Queens, Prison Sisters, Mimosa Queens and Green Sisters earned their qualification to the national finals through regional encounters.

Yesterday, Airwing finished second to leaders Diamonds in Group A during the preliminary round of the national finals after winning two of their three games. They beat Young Sisters 31-14 and Lameck Queens 30-28. But they lost 13-52 to Diamonds.

However, they went through strenuous pain to beat Lameck Queens, who gave them tough time throughout their last preliminary encounter. Lameck Queens were leading 27-25 two minutes before the final whistle, but some silly mistakes cost them the game.

In Group B, Complex Tigresses and MTL Queens qualified for the quarter-finals at the expense of Splash Queens and Mimosa Queens. They won three games and two matches respectively.

Blue Eagles Sisters were the only side assured of a quarter-final slot from Group C as we went to press. Mafco and Green Sisters were battling it out for the other slot as Prison Sisters stuttered earlier on the day with two successive defeats.

Civonets dominated Group D with two victories and they were expected to make it to the quarter-finals alongside winners of the Woget Stars versus Young Gals encounter.
